Ten years earlier almost to the day, men used sandbags in March 1937 to hold back flood water from the Old West River alongside the road from Willingham to Earith.  This had been the meandering course to The Wash taken by the river Great Ouse before the two straight Bedford rivers had been dug from Earith to Denver Sluice in the 1630s and the 1650s.
